Mission 2

Process

Our goals for this mission were to make a YouTube video and channel accompanied by a power point presentation including information on YouTube and the community that surrounded it. I had hoped that in the end that we would have a well made YouTube video and channel made along with a good presentation which I feel is necessary for this assignment because there is always a lot to talk about regarding YouTube because it is really the main form of entertainment with 100's of millions of videos being views daily. The main resource and a very important one for this mission was the internet. This is due to all of the research being looking at different YouTube videos etc and then also the actual YouTube website being used to make the channel and upload the video which was edited and recorded on Jades phone using the apple app iMovies, which is actually used by many people who regularly upload on YouTube to edit their videos,. We used this as we thought it would be more authentic to the type of video we made because it is the application that many people in that part of YouTube use to edit their own videos.

Product

The creation of the product was actually quite simple, firstly it was down to thinking of ideas for a video. As a group we were coming up with ideas but not many really that we were all able to really get behind, maybe this was down to differences in interests between the group members, which is no problem at all just something to consider in the future. We settled on doing a makeup tutorial because that is actually a very popular type of video on YouTube and many people make careers Jade ended up recording the video herself  because we struggled to get a time to record a video in college and the actual video we were doing required many things she had at home (makeup etc). On YouTube To make a channel all you need is to make a name for your channel and then you can add a profile picture and cover photo which was something we didn't really think of until seeing one of the other groups which had made an exceptional profile picture and cover photo and really made the channel look professional. In terms of making the presentation my part of it was about how YouTubers make their money so it was largely based on the recent events of a big boxing match between two of YouTubes biggest stars which was happening around the time I was doing the assignment so it was prominent on my mind, in terms of research I watched a lot of videos and podcasts about the events to gather as much information as possible, before watching them I had laid out a number of things like the venue and attendance and pay per view numbers which I deemed important and made sure to take note of all these so I could then just go and make it all at once. I then made slides about their money they make from advertising which I found out about through a series of videos, another slide was about merchandise sales which is a big part of YouTube with creators selling hoodies and t-shirts etc. and then one more slide which outlined how YouTubers make money from sponsorships/brand deals  The two girls also made their own parts in the presentation which included how the video was made and the history of YouTube.

Reflection

During the course of completing this assignment I learned a lot about YouTube. I learned that even though the videos are the main part of why they are well known and successful, they're often not even the main source of income for most YouTubers, I learned that the money they make from their videos is all down to advertising and that there is a formula to work out how much they made corresponding to their views. I also learned a lot about YouTube boxing which made both KSI and Logan Paul millions each. I learned how to edit videos using iMovies and how to upload a video to YouTube. 

In terms of success and failure I think we succeeded in the base tasks of  making a YouTube video and channel and uploading a video along with making a presentation to accompany it. I learned that I need to commit more to these group assignments because it can prove to be so difficult at times to get everyone somewhere at the same time for recording etc. in time outside of lectures.
